From the artist:
Exciting news for all tarot lovers: After long ten years in the making, I am finally releasing an actual, physical deck of the tarot cards I painted in 2014 in Joshua Tree. Named after the place that became a pivotal moment in my life, this project signifies a completion of a major life cycle for me. 2014 was an incredibly hard year that presented challenges that seemed insurmountable. It broke me and forced me to rebuild myself back better. Anyone familiar with the desert knows that it’s magic. Joshua Tree is a place that will reveal you to yourself like no other. It’s beautiful, but it’s ruthless, too. I’m grateful for the experience because without it, there wouldn’t be Joshua Tree Tarot. I had been nursing the idea to paint a full, 78 card tarot deck for years, but couldn’t find the time, and things just weren’t aligning. Suddenly finding myself in an unfamiliar place with lots of time on my hands was the best time I could have found, so I went for it. While doing research for this project, I met so many wonderful people - artists, tarot readers, astrologers - who have all contributed to the energy I’ve put into these cards. You should know that I never worked on them in a bad mood, or when I didn’t feel like it. That’s part of the reason why it took so long. Each card is approximately 10 by 5.5 inches tall, painted by hand with watercolor. I based the images relying heavily on my favorite tarot deck - Rider-Waite-Smith, illustrated brilliantly by Pamela Colman-Smith. It was a delight to work on and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it. With love, Anya
